INDIGENOUS MOVEMENT: THE SUMMIT LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED
* José Rivera

Two heads of state accompanied Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa during the tenth summit of the Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de América (Bolivarian Alliance of American Peoples; Spanish acronym, ALBA) celebrated in Otavalo’s Federico Paéz Coliseum on June 24-25: Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez and Bolivia’s Evo Morales. For the first time, indigenous groups and Latin Americans of African descent participated in the congress, which included delegations from Nicaragua, Barbuda and Antigua, the Dominican Republic, San Vicente, Granada and Cuba.
Not everyone was satisfied by the ALBA summit. Spokespeople for indigenous groups said that the delegations did not include people who truly represented all of Ecuador’s peoples and nations. Indigenous leaders, who said they had not been invited to the summit, held their own events concurrently.
